  1. Ignacio Rela says:

    1) Identify and transcribe quotes illustrating the main character’s prison and analyze them.
“… working from 8 in the morning to almost midnight every day, except for an hour off each afternoon…” he was really entrapped on his duty, he couldn`t do anything but work; he was told about the USA being the land of hopes and everything he got was a prison.
“but everything had fouled up against him before he could.” he couldn`t go against the system, he was part of system especially from the lower part and ther was no probability of progressing (the police dropped the candy exprenditory, which can be symbolized as a possibility of progressing.)
”Tommy Castelli’s life was a screaming bore” his life was completely boring an monotonous.
    2) Identify and transcribe quotes illustrating the male character’s feeling towards the little girl.

“”Go home,” Tommy ordered the girl” Altough she was seen by almost everybody stealing, tommy wanted to “save” in a way the girls life because if she was caught supposedly his life would be as ingratious as the one of tommy.
’I let her take it” Tommy was crossing out, probably one of the most harshful situation, he tried to be merciful and to put all the weight on him due to the episode of the girl stealing the candy; he tried to save the life of a girl which was part of the system and thanks to tommy and his hard labour she could be in that position and tommy as everyday, he sacrifed for the girl (the system).

  2. Francisco Okecki says:

Tommy was trap in a prision, which was his own life. ”being trapped in past dreams”. This means that decisions he had made earlier in his life trapped him in his present which is runing a candy store “for honest living” which was forced by his father in-law, furthermore, he is married to a woman “too plain and lank a chick for his personal taste”, which, all in all, formed his life which Bernard Malamud calls, the prision.

  3. Francisca Müller says:

”being trapped in past dreams” In this quote is revealed how Tommy suffered from something he did on the past and could not get over it and go on with his life.
“everything fouled up against him before he could” This quote refflects how sad and depressive was his life, and made him felt in a prision.

“He found himself thinking about the way his life had turned out, and then about this gril, moved that she was so young and a thief. He felt he ought to do something for her, warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started.” Here, we can see how Tommy feels something special for the girl and, at some point, feel identify. Thats why he doesnt want to accuse her.

  4. Emi Molmenti says:

-Tommy felt in a prison. He was “trapped in old mistakes”, he was trapped in a life that he didnt’t enjoy. He worked in a job he didnt’ like and was married with a woman he didn’t love “open a candy store for him to make a honest living.” “Rosa was too plain and lank a chick for his personal taste”. He didn’t like his life that’s why, he “beat off to Texas” but then he came back to his prison.
-He felt that by helping the girl, he was helping himself. He could see himself in her. “He felt he ought to do something for her, warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started”. He felt related to her, he wanted to warn her so as to stop being a “thief” before it would be too late, and she would be in prison like him.

  5. Joaquin Olaizola says:

“He wouldn´t spit on a candy store, and Rosa was too plain and lank a chick for his personal taste, so he beat it off to Texas and bummed around in too much space, and when he came back everybody said it was for Rosa and the candy store, and it was all arranged again and he, without saying no, was in it.” In this quotation we can see how Tommy felt about his arranged life, he had a wife he didn`t choose, a work he hated and although he tried to escape from this horrible reality, he failed. He couldn`t run away from his prison. He was not able to say no.

“He found himself thinking about the way his life had turned out, and then about this girl, moved that she was so young and a thief. He felt he ought to do something for her, warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started.” He wanted to help her because of what his uncle lived. He tried to help her and change her future, to take her away from the prison, the real one. He lived in a prison he couldn`t escape from and he didin´t want this girl to suffer the same reality as him, he wanted her to be free.

  6. Milagros Brascó says:

How Tommy feels about the girl:
“He had to sit down. He kept trying to make the urge to speak to her go away but it came back stronger than ever.” Tommy was surprised of the attitude of the girl. He felt that he had to say something to her, but something stopped him of doing it.

“‘I let her take it,’ Tommy said.” Tommy was defending the girl because maybe he saw himself reflected on her, and he was kind of compassive.

  7. Sebastian Borda says:

Quote related with prison:”so he beat it out to Texas” he wanted to escape from all that was his life (prison), marriage with a woman he didn’t choose, opening a candy store and living honestly, he didn’t choose this time of living, but he failed, like always, and came back, he couldn’t escape his new life style(prison).
Quotes that have to do with the little girl: “he felt he ought to do something for her”- this meant he wants to warn her to not have a horrible life like him, she is young and she has time to change. “Thrust out at him her red tongue”- this showed she was a spoiled girl, she reacted disrespectfully at the person who tried to help her.

  8. agustin campion says:

-“being trapped in past dreams” this shows The “prision” in wich he is trapped, because of something he had made.

    – “this thought of his uncle dom” he had bad memories of his childhood because he stole things with him, he is trapped in past memories.

    – “dont do this or you will suffer your whole life” he sees the girl reflected on him. nobody helped him so he wants to help the girl so she doesnt suffer asi him.

  9. FranciscoRipoll(kun) says:

¨He cursed the candy store and Rosa, and cursed, from its beginning, his unhappy life”
he cursed the candy shop where he worked and Rosa because he was tired of be tethered to them and not to discard them to have a happy and fulfilling life as he wished.

  10. Virginia Loza says:

“but everything had fouled up against him before he could.” This quotation explain how Tommy Castelli’s life was.
“He found himself thinking about the way his life had turned out, and then about this girl, moved that she was so young and a thief.” This quotation explain how he felt in relation to the little child. He find himself thinking about his life and what he had live.

  11. Antonia flores piran says:

Tommy felt in prison because his life was extremelly boring and monotonus. Furthermore, his rutine repeatet daily in such a way that he felt locked in a tedious life.

“You never really got what you wanted. No matter how hard you tried you made mistakes and couldn’t get past them. You could never see the sky outside or the ocean because you were in a prison, except nobody called it a prison, and if you did they didn’t know what you were talking about, or they said they didn’t.”

2)Tommy felt reflected in the young girl. He felt empathy for her and all the situation. He wanted to do something for her in order to stop her for becoming like himself
“He found himself thinking about the way his life had turned out, and then about this gril, moved that she was so young and a thief. He felt he ought to do something for her, warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started.”

  12. Joaquin Diaz Walker says:

    1)”I let her take it”
Tommy was overwhelmed at what the girl had done. He felt that he had to talk to her but couldn’t.
2)”He thought about life. You never really got what you wanted. No matter how hard you tried to made mistakes and couldn’t get past them. You could never see the sky outside or the ocean because you were in a prison, except nobody called it a prison, and if you did they didn’t know what you were talking about, or said they didn’t.”
Tommy wants something more from life, but since people have made his decisions for him since he was a child, he doesn’t know what, or how to go about it. The candy shop, which he hates, provides him both livelihood security and keeps him from moving or leaving. He feels an obligation to the shop, his family, and his wife even as he resents them, and in his daily grind, the shop represents his own failure to rise above his roots.

  13. Belen Irazusta says:

The little girl symbolizes tommy´s life and how he used to do bad things as a child. As well as this girl he used to stole. “He had to sit down. He kept trying to make the urge to speak to her go away but it came back stronger than ever. “ although tom wanted to say something to the girl but he couldn’t, and he did not know why.
““I let her take it,” Tommy said.” I think that he let the girl do this because he could see himself reflected on this girl, so he knew what she was goiung through.
“ He thought about life. You never really got what you wanted. No matter how you tried you made mistakes and could never get past them. You could never see the sky and the ocean because you were locked in a prison, except that nobody called it a prison, and if you did, nobody knew what you were talking about, or they said they didn’t. “ I think that this quote is very important because we can see how really tommy felt, in a prison. He felt sad and depressed.

  15. sofi teran says:

    1)
´´It was this sick-in-the-stomach feeling of being trapped in his old mistakes´´
The mental prison of the character started long time ago, when he committed a mistake with was stealing for his uncle. And because of that he was send to a correctional since he was minor. Since then, he always felt as if his life was a prison. He was never let to do what he wanted or what he found better for the store, the only free time in his life was an hour in which he had a nap in a very tiny room. This in this case, the size of the room symbolizes his little freedom
´´he was too tired always for schemes´´
In addition to his little freedom he had always to do the same routine and always he had to obey his wife and do what she wanted. He is getting a little tired of everything, of the routine of not being allowed to do what he wanted whenever he wanted
    2)
´´He felt he ought to do something for her´´
He saw himself reflected in the girl when he realized he was stealing. He wanted to help her so as her not to end like him, in a metal prison. He knew what would happen to her if she kept doing that and wanted to save her from the life he had. He felt as if it was his duty to save her
´´He figured he would have to do something sure soon, or it would get harder for the girl to stop her stealing´´
he found it hard to talk to the girl so as to make her understand that what she was doing it was not a good idea and that it wouldn´t led her through a good way. He thought that maybe the girl may get angry, frighten or scared if he said something. However, he was decided that he had to make her understand that he was not judging her but helping her and that although it was hard for him to talk to her he should do it for her safety.

  16. Mili Alezzandrini says:

1)”Tommy Castelli’s life was a screaming bore” With this quote we can say that the character’s life was very boring.”trapped in old mistakes” “the prison”
2)”He had to sit down. he kept trying to make the urge to speak to her go away but ir came back stronger than ever”
Tommy was overwhelmed at what the girl had done. he felt that he had to talk to her but couldn’t.
    “i let her take it”
Tommy was standing up for the girl, maybe because he saw a little of himself in her and knew what she was going through.

  17. Justo Fernandez Vidal says:

    1) Identify and transcribe quotes illustrating the main character’s prison and analyze them.
-“… working from 8 in the morning to almost midnight every day, except for an hour off each afternoon…” The work in the candy store was Tommy’s physical or literal prison, as he was all day long in there and could only rest an hour.
    – “…he took a chance and let them put in a slot machine… ” ‘Them’ are people from the syndicate. Tommy wanted to put a slot machine to have an extra profit. When Rosa came back from her mother’s house and saw the slot, she began to yell at him. Rosa was another kind of prison for Tommy, as she let him do or buy nothing without asking her before.
    – “He felt he ought to do something for her…” When the little girl steals the chocolate bars, Tommy has the need to help her, for her not to end like him (as Tony was involved in illegal and criminal cases). “…she managed to turn her white face and thrust out at him her red tongue.” After Tony had defended the girl while Rosa was “shaking” her, she still showed Tommy her tongue, as mocking him. Tommy saw himself reflected in the little girl, if he could help her, he would be helping himself, but he failed to do this. Tommy was emotionally trapped or mentally trapped, as he couldn’t help himself to get out of the situation he was living.
-“…leading up the holdup of a liquor store, that had started all the present trouble. ” Tommy was also imprisoned in old mistakes he had done. These mistakes led to his present, unhappy life. As he was hanging out with these liquor store stealers, his parents arranged him a marriage with Rosa, to insert him in the society.
    2) Identify and transcribe quotes illustrating the male character’s feeling towards the little girl.
-“…he tore her away from the girl… ” Tommy felt sorry for the girl; he could see himself when he was younger so he tried to help her.
-“…he worried he would not know what to say to her. ”Tommy felt kind of scared towards the girl. Although she was very little, he was afraid and couldn’t decide what to do about her: talk to her or leave a note for her.
-“He was greatly disappointed because she had never failed to come before. ”Tommy had decided to leave a not for her, but he ended disappointed towards her because she didn’t appear that Monday.

  18. Nicolás Araya says:

    Quotations about the character´s prision:
    – “Tony would marry her and the father-in-law would, out of his own savings, open a candy store for him to make a honest living”. This quotation shows that his life was based in decisions from other people and not of his own. He lived in a prision because that was not the life that he had chosen and he could not escape from it.
    – “It was all arranged again and, without saying no, was in it”. This is a very good example of his prison. When he tried to escape from his life to Texas, he failed and did not have success there, which tells us that even though he tried to get out of it, he always ended up back there and could not say no.
    – “Her father came in shouting that he was a criminal and chopped the machine apart with a plumber´s hammer”. Again when he tried to change, at least, his prision by buying the slot machine, he failed. Rosa started screaming and her father broke apart the machine, which tells us how he could not take decisions on his own and could not change the prision where he was living.

Quotations about the male´s feelings towards the girl:
    – “He asked himself what difference does it make if she swipes candy”. At first he was indifferent towards the girl and did not want her to feel uncomfortable by telling her not to steal. He let her steal and leave with the chocolate. He also did not know what to tell her.
    – “Don´t do this any more or you will suffer your whole life”. This is the letter that Tommy put between the chocolates so that the girl would read it. Now he knew that she should not steal, because he remembers that he ended up with that life by being involved in dark businesses like stealing, and he did not want her to end up like him.
    – “”Go home,” Tommy ordered the girl”. Even though she had alredy been discovered, he wanted the situation to slip away, because a punishment would mean a prision to the girl just like it did to Tommy.

    Literature
    • Identify and transcribe quotation illustrating the character prison and analyze it.

    Tommy (real mane Tony) :
“a screaming bore”- that’s the way the main character describe his life, something boning; but it had not been his whole life like that, before marrying Rosa he was “a kid of many dreams and scheme”.
He had an arrange marriage with a person he didn’t love and a candy store he didn’t choose, but it was opened for him “to make an honest living” (“when he was sixteen”, he left the school and started hanging out with the neighbor gangsters: “gray hated, thick-soled-shoe boy”, that’s why the store was opened to make a “HONEST” living).

    • Identify and transcribe quotations illustrating the male character feelings towards the girl.

“He had to sit down. He kept on trying to make the urge to speak to het to go away but it came back stronger than ever” Tommy was overwhelmed for what the girl had done. He felt that he had to talk to her but he couldn’t.

“Warn her to cut it out before she got trapped and fouled up her life before it got started.” He felt identify with the ten years old girl.

“I let her take it” Tommy maybe blamed himself because he saw a little of him in her.
