  1. Ignacio+Rela says:

    1) the population is subservant because they are being ruled by a higher class (the government ) and they dont even realize about this, they dont oppose to the system and obey everything. Also they only think that the solution to all the problems is going to war nad they are very intolerant with the differences and the different ideas other people may have,
    2) It is said that “the older they get, the less open they are” young population is much more open minded and accept diversity of thinking for example.
    3) The aliens don’t understand why people don’t worry about the menace, although they have already adviced the youngsters and the elders. They hoped that they could help the people but the people didn`t realized although that event, an earthqueake had already happened 60 years ago.
    4) The song represents the incapacity of fear” from the humans, because they seem to know what will happen but don’t react to it, and insteaf they make a song.
    5) “Reacted in exactly the same way as their elders”. This shows the poor answer to the warnings of the aliens.
    6) “We now do know and will attempt a short description” and “we must condense this report if we wish…”. (page 257)

  2. Francisco Okecki says:

    1) The aliens sees the human population as subservient of war because we think is the only way of resolving problems added to the lack of care of dying. The difference between the youngest and the oldest is that young people´s porpouse is participating in wars and not caring about anything while old people are more likely to choose words before violence, however, they are less clear minded than the youngsters.
    2) Aliens saw this incapacity as lack of fear of dying because we knew our end was near but we did not care at all in addition to non caring what message they wanted to transmit to us. The song message was that we knew we were going to die but we did not mind.
    3) “It was like pouring a liquid into a container that has a hole in it”. This comparison is used to make the reader understand how our capacity of retaining information was.
    4) -“…this was the only moment of real danger during the whole mission.”

  3. Joaquin+Olaizola says:

    1) People are subservient of war, this idea is so powerfull that aliens see us as slaves of war. We think the only solution for our problems is getting involve in wars.
2)They thought incapacity of fear was transmitted with the idea of not understanding what the aliens tried to tell them, so, to conclude, the fear transmitted by the aliens, was going to be tried out with younger people, not with elders, because, the aliens understood that elders didn’t know what they were talking about.
    3) What the aliens thought about this incapacity was that they were resisting to interpretate the message. Then they realized that the older people get, the less open they are to new thought material. This could be related to the attemps to warn the citizens because they tried to communicate with the elderest.
    4) “…the material was running straight through their mental apparatus like water through sieves…” The comparison is used for the reader understand what the author is trying to express. In this case, that this ‘material’ passed through our minds as water through colander.

  4. Nicolás Araya says:

1- The population is subservient because they don’t oppose to the system and live a a slavish group which obeys orders without questioning. They are in constant war and the authorities aren’t tolerant to the population that wants to change the system or the way of thinking. For example, someone who reports “flying saucers” is silenced. The people is (without realizing) slave to the authorities.
2- The young population is said to be more open minded that the elders, “…the older they get, the less open they are” as aliens describe them.
3- The aliens don’t understand why the people don’t show response to the warning even though they had tried twice and with both elders and youngsters. They hoped that the population would eventually realise the danger, which didn’t happen. What confused the aliens the most is the fact that they had already gone through such an event, but still saw “no change in their mental structure”.
4- The song represents the incapacity of fear” from the humans, because they seem to know what will happen but don’t react to it, and insteaf they make a song.
5- “Reacted in exactly the same way as their elders”. This shows the poor answer to the warnings of the aliens.
6- “We now do know and will attempt a short description” and “we must condense this report if we wish…”. (page 257)

  5. Juan Ignacio Lopez Vargas says:

Aliens think people are subservient of war and conflicts. They cannot understand how humans solve their problems always by fighting. People contributes to war.

The young are seen as close-minded because were always oppressed by the government’s imposition. They believed in war and couldn’t solve problems by other way, unlike the elders, who trusted in dialogue and peace. Besides, the elders are also seen as close-minded because they didn’t adapt to new things such as aliens.

They thought of the incapacity of fear as impossible to the elders because they didn’t get the message, what they were trying to tell. But they saw the youngsters as more capable by their adaption to new things.

  6. Milagors Zubizarreta says:

    Subservient Populations
Why and how are people subservient?
What’s the difference between the elders and the youngsters?

People are subservient in the contribution with fighting and war they do nothing to stop it. They see war as a solution to achieve peace. Aliens do not get why people do this. They see war as something horrible where people have to live in horrible conditions and lots of them end up in dead. They can not see how was is a logical solution to peace because it causes absolutely everything but peace. Aliens think that people are subservient because they see this as their only option and solutions when it actually isn’t.

The young in the city are seen as people who can not change this is because they have grown closed minded. They have always followed what the government and the elders told them to do. Moreover, elders are also seen as people who have a closed mind, because they are not opened to any changes, they like their city and can’t imagine it any other way. That is why they want the “aliens” to go they don’t want anything to change in their city.

    Incapacity for fear
What do the aliens think about this incapacity? How is this related to the aliens’ two failed attempts to warn the citizens?
What does the song stand for?

Aliens see this incapacity of fear as a weakness. For them ,us not fearing destruction is the reason why we do nothing to change it. The reason for this incapacity of fear is that since we have already faced this threart we know what the aliens are trying to tell us.
This relates with the faild attempts because aliens tried to transmit the message to older people, which seem to have this incapacity placed inside. The aliens couldnt make the citizens do something about the problem, and avoid it. Humans knew about the problem but the fact of not having fear made them not acttowards the problem.

  7. Maria Brito P and Milagros Zubizarreta says:

    a) People in the city are subservient to war, this means that aliens see war as something humans cant deal with and something. They do not see how war destroys and kills people, aliens cant understand why people don’t care about death.
    b) The elders are close minded, they cant accept the aliens, or the fact that a threat could destroy their kind of life. They also can´t accept the fact that there are aliens in the earth.
The youngsters are able to accept the changing and accepting new things, and they are not conscious of city that aliens are telling them, so in the end they think as as the old people do, because none of them can´t really be able of understanding the possible threat that the aliens are trying for them to be aware of.
    c) Aliens thought the old people could not deal with fear because they had already been through this threat and nothing happened, so the aliens were not capable of completing the first part with the old. The youngers also could not deal with fear.

    1) People are subservient because they help to the continuity of war. People contributes with war. They don’t stop it. People are subservient of war by the fact that they see as mechanism to achieve peace, war.
    2) The youngesters, unlike the elders, seem to be unable to understand the extent to which they are subjugated to the needs of war. They would never put themselves in a position where their authorities could capture or question them.
    3) What the aliens thought about this incapacity was that they were resisting to interpretate the message. Then they realized that the older people get, the less open they are to new thought material. This could be related to the attemps to warn the citizens because they tried to communicate with the elderest.
    4) The songs shows that literature is the only one that realizes the problem however it does nothing to exploit her potential.
5)”We decided to abandon the first phase in the belief that the material was running straight through their mental apparatus like water through sieves because it was so foreign to the existing mental furniture of their minds that they were not able to recognize what they were saying” By using Simile the author conveys the idea that there`s a constant comparison between humans and aliens because aliens are constantly trying to understand human`s behaviour.
6)”We now do know and will attempt a short story” The voice is reflecting about his text. He tells the reader he would do a short story now.

  10. Francisca Muller says:

People are subservient of fights and wars and aliens can´t really understand why humans can only solve their problems by going to war. They live in unhealthy conditions usually and death is not something that seems really important to humans so aliens think they are subservient of war because is the only option they think they have, no matter the consequences as for example death.

The young in the city are seen as people who cant change because they have grown closed minded, always following what the government and the elders tell them to do. Also, youngs are grown up in a society adapted and preppeared for war, while adults were borned and lived on a place where dialogue was used instead of violence.

The aliens believe that human’s incapacity of fear is because they had already faced this situation, and they knew aliens were trying to communicate with them. But as they think that the elders know everything about this, they want to try with another group of people, so that is why they are trying with the youngers.

  11. Joaco Diaz Walker and Fede Tear says:

1-They are subservient, because, as the aliens think, we (people), are only capable of solving our problems with wars and violence. Also, apart of not being capable of solving our conflicts without wars, they say something is threatening the city. And something which had threatened the city. As the aliens also said, they’ve tried to transmit the information of the threatening of the city, to the older people, but these, didn’t understand.
2-They thought incapacity of fear was transmitted with the idea of not understanding what the aliens tried to tell them, so, to conclude, the fear transmitted by the aliens, was going to be tried out with younger people, not with elders, because, the aliens understood that elders didn’t know what they were talking about.
3-“the material was running straight through their mental apparatus like water through sieves” This is a visual image, and is written so as the author to explain the reader how were the the minds and the movement of the liquid of their heads.
Metatextuality. -“We now do now and will attempt a short description.”

  12. Sebas Borda says:

People in the city are subservent to war, this means that they see war as something they can not go against and as something common for the government to do to try and solve problems. They do not see hay war destroys and kills people, they see war as a method to bring peace.
The young in the city are seen as people who cant change because they have grown closed minded, always following what the government and the elders tell them to do. Elders are also seen as people who have a closed mind, because they dont want any thing to change, they like the city as it is and cant imagine it changing, thats why they want the “aliens” to go.
Aliens think of the incapacity we have as a weakness, because we dont fear destruction, wich means that we dont do nothing about it to change it and try to help avoid the problem, which as a result people wouldnt die. The capacity of having no fear relates with the faild attempts because the aliens couldnt make the citizens do something about the problem, and avoid it. Humans knew about the problem but the fact of not having fear doomed them by not acting towards the problem and avoiding death.

  13. Majo Tear says:

    Subservient Populations

Why and how are people subservient?
People are subservient of fights and wars and aliens can´t really understand why humans can only solve their problems by going to war. They live in unhealthy conditions usually and death is not something that seems really important to humans so aliens think they are subservient of war because is the only option they think they have, no matter the consequences as for example death.

What’s the difference between the elders and the youngsters?
The elders are close minded as they don´t try to adapt to new things like the aliens, or a threat that would destroy their lifestyle and own life in most probability. They also can´t accept the fact that there are aliens in the earth as they can´t deal with stuff out of their comfort zone.
The youngsters on the contrary are capable of changing and accepting new things, and they are not aware of the actual death or threat of the city that aliens are telling them, so in the end they are the same as the old people because none of them can´t really be capable of understanding the possible threat that the aliens are trying for them to be aware of.

    Incapacity for fear

What do the aliens think about this incapacity? How is this related to the aliens’ two failed attempts to warn the citizens?
Aliens thought the old people were incapable of fear because they had already undergone this threat and nothing happened, so the aliens were not capable of completing the phase I with the old. This is how they tried other missions with the youngsters and failed too, as young people were also incapable of fear because of their unawareness.

  14. Belen+Gay says:

1)Humans have many problems with theirselves so aliens didn’t take care of them. The young people were used for wars. and the oldest ones use world to communicate instead of using violence.
    2) the incapacity of fear in humans was because Aliens want to communicate with them and to trasnmit the messages. The problem about the aliens was that they trasmit the message to the older people and it was more common that the oldest people can be crazy because of the years.
    3) “…this was the only moment of real danger during the whole mission.”

  15. FranciscoRipoll says:

People are principally subservient of war. This is reflected on the perspective of aliens that see us as the war slaves. Through the story, aliens can not understand why people do not care about a future death.

The difference between youngsters and elders is that youngsters have grown up in a society that’s prepared to go to war and are typically used to an early death. However adults are able to delude themselves, using dialogue instead of using violence.

The aliens think that the incapacity of humans to be afraid of this situation is because they have alreay faced this threat, that´s why they do not fear death even though aliens had alerted them of the situation they were involved. They could not deliver the message properly because they tried to pass it to the elders.

People are subservient of war, this idea is so powerfull that aliens see us as slaves of war. We think the only solution for our problems is getting involve in wars.
What’s the difference between the elders and the youngsters?
Young people have grown in a society of total war prepareness and are naturally reluctant to face a future that can only mean early death; they are clear minded, passive and hopless. They are peace-loving, fatalistic, sometimes pot-smoking, guitar-playing, sad-song singing individuals. Older people are more deluved to themselves, they can use words without using violence.

    Incapacity for fear

What do the aliens think about this incapacity? How is this related to the aliens’ two failed attempts to warn the citizens?

  18. Antonia Flores Piran says:

People are subservient because they live in a city that is being destructed and they still survive despite all the damage caused. Aliens can not understand why people would be indifferent of their probable death.

The difference between the eldest and the youngest is that the younger people are mistrusted because of their age. “While the young ones were excluded or had decided to exclude themselves” they are indifferent to possible death. They believe that there is nothing they can do to save them, and do not care. “They are not able to believe in their own effectiveness” What is more, they have no opinion of their own, neither new ideas of what could be done. They are used to repeat what other people say. The eldest people are aware of what was happening but were hostile to the alien`s suggestions. They are cheerful and indifferent. “The older ones felt a responsibility or a power to act, as members of society” they are also paranoiac “suspicious of anything but the familiar”, the older they get, the less opened they are to new material.

“…in other words, a fire being smaller, more manageable phenomenon, they preferred, and sometimes still preferred, to use that word (the great fire), instead of the word for the uncontrolled shaking of the earth itself” This quote can clearly demonstrate the criticism of the human race and its inability to grasp the concept of large events out of their control. The unknown narrator, that is an alien speaks of his attempts to warn people of the city, and the reasons all the three attempts failed. The narrator loses hope and abandons the attempt to warn the city believing that the city has condemned itself to its destruction and extinction.

  19. Justo Fernandez Vidal says:

    Subservient Populations
-People are subservient of war. The aliens see us as the war’s slaves. We solve all our problems through war, as if war was the only choice we had. This is why aliens think we are subservient, of war.
-Young people have grown in a society of total war-preparedness and are naturally reluctant to face a future that can only mean early death; they are clear-minded, passive and hopeless. Older people are more delude to themselves, they can use words without using violence.
    Incapacity for fear
    – Alien think that the incapacity of fear the humans have is due to the fact that we have already faced this threat, so we have no fear, as we know what the aliens are trying to tell us. Aliens failed to transmit the message because they tried to transmit it to older people, which seem to have this incapacity placed inside.

  20. sofi-teran@hotmail.com says:

    1) People are subservient because for the aliens we are an inferior race that is no capable of resolving their problems if is not through wars. We depend on wars. And also because humans are being warned about a threat that is getting near to the city, which it had already threatened the city before and we haven´t learned from our past mistakes
The youngsters are used to war; they have grown in a society of total war preparedness. They are used to facing an early death. However they are also clear-minded
Older people are much more able to delude themselves, to use words instead of violence

    2) The aliens thought that this incapacity of fear was created because the humans already knew what they were trying to communicate them. In addition, they thought that this incapacity of fear was only something that the elder’s had. So they wanted to try with another group of people. So in fact it may be that there’s was not fear but that they were already used to that threat.
So this thing of not having fear, made it difficult for the aliens to transmit them the message that they intended to send them
