“Report on a Threatened City”

On Friday we will start reading a short story by Doris Lessing, “Report on a Threatened City”.
For that, I want you to copy a dictionary definition of the word “report”.
According to such definition, answer briefly the following questions:
A) What kind of text is a report?
B) What kind of language is used (formal, informal)? Why? What is its purpose?

Also, answer these questions below:
C) Have you ever written a report? On what? Did you use that kind of language?
D) What can the threat be like?
E) What kind of city do you imagine?

    a) An account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc.
    b) A formal language is used. Because usually reports are used to communicate important things, such as an accident, and sometimes are published in newspapers.
    c) Yes I did write a report once. It was at school. I wrote about crime, I did have to use formal language and also specific vocabulary.
    d) The threat could be an economical threat which would affect all the city cents. Also the threat could be on a city threatened by a natural disaster or maybe by a terrorist attack.
    e) I imagine a deserted city were there is a very small number of people living there. They live insecure because of strange and terrifying events that occur in this city. It would be a dark and unhappy environment.

    B) Reports are always in formal style because they are published in magazines and newspapers. The writer doesn’t know to whom is he writing so he has to generalize.

    C) Yes I did, for school. I wrote reports on books and news on newspapers, and always the language must be formal.

    D) The threat could be paranormal. I imagine a ghost or aliens.

    E) I imagine an old city if it’s from the ghost stories, and one very modern if it’s an alien’s story.

    I imagine a crowded asian city at war with an atmosphere of violence and death.

    The language used is formal because they are usually published in magazines or newspapers.

    Yes, I have written many of them in school. I remember one of them was about a man who lived in the middle of the mountains and refused to leave from there although there were many floodings because of his roots and culture.
    D) What can the threat be like?
    It could be about a tsunami or an earthquake.
    E) What kind of city do you imagine?
    I can imagine a city that is on a way weak due to the fact that is is threatened, I imagine there is a high level of poverty.

    b) most of the times is formal, because these report is always directed to people that is not your fiend(maybe yes but you and your friend are in a different context)
    c)yes, in language class. Unfortunately I failed because i have wirtten it in an informal style.

    e) a perfect city in which everyone is so egocentric they dont realise about an important threat

    B) Formal, thanks to the fact that reports are usually used by the media and you can’t be informal when you are giving information through the television, radio, newspaper, etc. A report can also be used for policeman when describing a crime scene which needs to be written formally.

    D) I imagine the threat is the end of the world predicted by creatures which are not from the earth that come here to warn us about the end of our planet. But I don’t know, is only a wild guess

    c) Yes, I have written reports for writings in school. They were usually based on texts given to us and the language was formal since the intructions always adress that a report is is usually posted on a newspaper, magazine etc.
    d)The threat can be a terrosits threat or a threat of bad weather or on an economic problem coming. Basically a threat is a warning about something bad.
    e) I imagine a big city with people filled with fear because of this threat.

    A) A report is a text which provides information to the reader. It describes a determined situation or action.
    B) Formal, because it is mostly written in the working enviroment (For instance, to do a report of a current project of a company) or in newspapers, which are very important documents.
    C) I have mostly written reports for school, for example to report a crime or a persecution. We were asked to used specific language, very detailed descriptions with accurate vocabulary.
    D) The threat can be external (something from outside the city is dangerous) or internal (its own population/society/enviroment is going to destroy itself).
    E) I imagine an underdeveloped city, which is not redy to handle a possible threat. It has very little capacity of defending itself or realize what is happening.

    D) the threat might be about problems in society and that they are very reflected in crimes and murders.

    E) I imagine a very sad city, with a lot of crimes going on, where it is very unsafe to go out at night.

    A) is an account, it could be of an event, situation, etc. it is something you have seen and write about.
    B) formal language. usually a report is written by people from the newspaper, so it has to have an appropiate language.
    C)yes, once for school work. it was on a story about crime and yes i did have to write it with formal language and had to use important vocabulary.
    D) the threat could be on an incident in wich a guy could have commited terrorism or a threat of that. also, a crime could have happened and the guy is still not caught and is threatening to continue killing.
    E) I imagine a small city in wich not many people live. without resources.

    I found two definitions that can match the title of the short story:
    1. An account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry.
    2. An account of a speech, debate, meeting, etc., especially as taken down for publication.

    Answers of questions:
    A. A report is descriptive writing about something that has happened, is happening, or will happen.
    B. It is formal language because a report is usually made for a lot of people to read, and a report is usually made of something important that happened, so informal wouldn’t really match the context of the report.
    C. Yes in language I have written a report. As I said in the previous answer, I used formal language because a report is usually done for many people to read, and in the report you are not telling the story to a friend of yours, you write it to people who you don’t know will read it so it needs to be formal, so everyone can understand it perfectly.
    D. The threat can be a dangerous weather coming in, like a hurricane or tornado. The threat can also be of a disease that has killed a lot of people in other parts of the world and it’s near that city to infect citizens there. The threat can also be of a serial killer that has come back to the city after many years of disappearing after a massacre they have created.
    E. I imagine a big city, like the capital of a country, like Buenos Aires or maybe Washington DC, somewhere were it is very crowded by citizens and that threat would affect almost everybody.

    2) The language is informal, because, the main objective of the report, is to make readers feel the same way you were feeling when that thing happened.

    4)I think it would be because of crime. Murders, rapes, or even kidnapping.
    5) I imagine a city, like Bangladesh, or even Bangkok. An Asian, fully polluted city.

    e)I imagen a big and dangerous city. Full of worry and stress people that never stop. In that city everyone thinks only on their own and don`t think about the rest.

    D) In my opinion, it can be the threat to be alone walking in the street or that someone can do something to you while you are walking.
    E) A big city, full of workers, people walking in the street really quickly because they are late and full of departments with offices.

    A report is a text which usually describes something. It is used to understand better something about a specific thing. The structrue of a report is divided in three. Firstly an introductory paragraph, then a body which can be divided in more than one paragraph, then a conclusion that is like a review of what the report was about like a summary.

    B) What kind of language is used (formal, informal)? Why? What is its purpose?

    The language used on a report is usually formal because you are writing to someone who you don´t know and the confidence you have with that person is not the same you have with a friend so you used a formal style.

    C) Have you ever written a report? On what? Did you use that kind of language?

    Yes I had written a report during secondary school, I used formal language and it was based on my last holidays.

    D) What can the threat be like?

    The threat can be the presence of creepy creatures in the city and the sound of repentant souls surrounding in the atmosphere.

    E) What kind of city do you imagine?

    I imagine a desolated city which few pepole living there and a ghotic place where persons can heard voices that came from an undiscovered place and that produce fear on the characters of the story.
